The Loerie Awards may be the highlight of September’s creative calendar, but there is a lot on offer for visitors wanting to soak up the city’s culture, design, and creative innovation befitting a city that was recently announced as World Design Capital 2014.

World Design Capital is a title that recognizes cities that are using design for social, cultural, and economic development. This accolade is critical for Cape Town’s reputation as an urban destination that has adopted design to accelerate positive transformation. Creatives and residents of the city are currently being called upon to submit ideas and examples of great design use in the city, in order to start the process of coordinating a year-long series of design-focused events for 2014. The Loerie Awards and Creative Week are long-standing examples of Cape Town’s creative ethos and commitment to positive change.

As part of Cape Town Tourism’s domestic tourism strategy and aim to reduce the negative impact of seasonality, Cape Town Tourism and Thompsons Holidays are offering a great value travel package over the Loeries (long) weekend of September 21-24. The package includes return flight tickets on Mango Airlines, three days of car hire from Avis (with 200 km free per day), and three night’s accommodation at the Protea Hotel President in Green Point (including breakfast each day) from R3599 per person sharing. What to do with the long weekend in Cape Town:

The Loerie Awards will, for the fourth consecutive year, be held in Cape Town, taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from September 15-23, 2012. The event will play a significant role in the World Design Capital 2014 series of events during the year of the title.

Creative Week Cape Town – September 15-23 – a crowd-sourced festival of creative events that ties together the month of inspirational arts, innovation, and creative expression.

Open Book Festival – September 20-24 – which gathers 34 international authors over 100 events.

Iziko Museums Heritage Celebrations – September 17-24 – when access to all Iziko Museums (with the exception of The Castle and The Planetarium) is complimentary.

Mariëtte du Toit-Helmbold, CEO of Cape Town Tourism, commented: “This month of creativity is just a taste of what we can expect in the run-up and during our year as World Design Capital in 2014. Cape Town is where it’s at right now for creative stimulation, networking, and collaboration. It’s a great time to visit and soak up our inspiring and innovative urban atmosphere.”
