NORTH SHORE, OAHU, HI – Turtle Bay Resort recently introduced its Insider’s Play List to help guests better experience Oahu’s fabled North Shore. Each list is authored by a hand-selected North Shore luminary who lives “The Life” to its fullest, and details the many inspirational ways to play along one of the world’s most storied coastlines. Previous contributors include stand up surf champion Kai Lenny and surf legend and the Executive Director of the Vans Triple Crown, Randy Rarick.

Chef Fred DeAngelo is Turtle Bay’s third luminary to share his Insider’s Play List. As an award-winning Chef and host of a dinner
at the James Beard House in New York City, Chef DeAngelo is a strong promoter of Hawaii’s farming community, using local products and produce throughout his menu. Chef DeAngelo also takes an active role in being an environmentally-responsible business owner by partnering with a company in the community to recycle his restaurant oil into biodiesel, among other products. In addition to being the Executive Chef and Owner of Ola at Turtle Bay Resort, he recently opened The Grove in Kailua.
Herewith is Chef Fred DeAngelo’s Insider’s Play List!

• I like to SUP (stand up paddle board) at Kawela Bay, one of the most secluded beaches on Oahu. Located near Turtle Bay Resort, it is a perfect spot to unwind.
The beach is uniquely protected by the reef that diffuses high waves during the winter months when other North Shore beaches get pounded by high surf. Kawela Bay’s near shore waters are calm and free of currents year-round, which is great for swimming, snorkeling, and SUPing!

• On Sundays, I try to drop by one of the many roadside fruit stands along King Kamehameha Highway. You can find fresh seasonal bananas, coconuts, mangos, avocados, star-fruit, as well as my favorite lumpia. Be sure to ask for it when you visit.

• We have a great staff at Ola at Turtle Bay Resort, and we are really like an o’hana (family). Everyone works hard and plays hard, which includes supporting the restaurant’s community service projects.
As a team, we regularly gather to clean our adopted stretch of highway fronting Turtle Bay Resort. Drop by the restaurant and find out when our next outing will be. You are more than welcome to join us!

• I am definitely biased, but let’s face it… it’s hard to find a better place than Ola to enjoy pūpū (appetizers) and cocktails! As one of the only restaurants in Hawaii located literally on the beach, you can kick your shoes off and enjoy our great food with the sand between your toes!
Try our seared beef poke and the kalua pork & goat cheese nachos – ono (delicious)!

• Another way I like to unwind is to visit Scott the bartender at Turtle Bay’s 21 Degrees North. As a long-time North Shore resident and resort employee, he’s a good source for local lore. While there, I, of course, like to enjoy tapas prepared by Chef John and Chef Hector. (Clearly I love eating and drinking!) We three are kindred spirits when it comes to preparing food… we support our local farms and use the best ingredients and seasonal products as possible.
