Earthquake rocks Greece

A quake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale with a depth of only 10 kilometers below ground surface occurred at 3:25 pm EET – Eastern European Standard Time, according to the Athens Observatory.

A quake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale with a depth of only 10 kilometers below ground surface occurred at 3:25 pm EET – Eastern European Standard Time, according to the Athens Observatory.

The Ministry of Tourism of Greece and the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) announced a while ago, that they have received reports since the earthquake that hit the south-western part of the country earlier this evening. According to the reports so far, no tourists are in danger, and there has been no report of damage in the hotel buildings in the areas hit hardest by the quake – Ilia and Achaia.

Two local citizens, however, lost their lives due to the earthquake, and more than 85 were injured and have been transferred to hospitals.

In additon to collapsed houses, there have been problems in transportation. Earlier, automobile traffic was disrupted on the 74 klm of the national road of Tripolis – Ancient Olympia – and in Diakofto due to landslides. In both cases, traffic circulation has been restored. Additionally, some train routes were suspended temporarily in Kato Achaia due to damages on the railway.
