Oneworld airline alliance considers collective fuel buying

ISTANBUL – Oneworld, one of three global airline alliances, that includes British Airways PLC and Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd., said Monday its members were considering buying fuel collectively.

Oneworld representative John McCulloh said a proposal to buy fuel together to save on costs was to be considered at a meeting next week.

McCulloh, speaking at the general meeting of airline industry body IATA, said fuel producers had clubbed together and collective bargaining by airlines could lead to savings.

Oneworld includes British Airways, AMR Corp.’s American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Finnair Oyj, Iberia Lineas Aereas De Espana, LAN Airlines, Qantas Airways Ltd., Japan Airlines Corp., Royal Jordanian and Malev.

McCulloh conceded some members were reticent about the idea without naming them.
