Alain St.Ange, the CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board, used a transit stop in Mauritius to meet with the Mauritian press to help raise the visibility of the 2012 India Ocean Vanilla Islands “Carnaval International de Victoria,” which is staged annually in Seychelles.
This year, it is Seychelles and La Reunion who have joined together to be co-hosts of the carnival, and the Mauritius press were asking why was Mauritius, an active and founder member of the Vanilla Islands , not co-hosting the carnival alongside Seychelles and La Reunion.
Alain St.Ange explained that the aim of the carnival was regional unity and that Seychelles still wanted to see Mauritians join in and be counted alongside the other two Vanilla Islands (Seychelles & La Reunion). “We are still hopeful that Mauritius, the third Indian Ocean island with the same population and cultural mix as Seychelles & La Reunion, will join us in this Vanilla Islands manifestation that showcases our very own regional culture and people. The Community of Nations is coming to our region, and the press are all descending for the carnival. We hope to have our islands’ political leaders stand together in unity, as our people proudly showcase our unique culture and diversity,” Alain St.Ange said.
Seychelles, La Reunion, and Mauritius also all have a similar local music called the Sega, and this carnival would be the ideal platform to the world to showcase the common historical links of the three Indian Ocean islands. So far, it is confirmed that some 26 foreign delegations are participating in the 2012 Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands Carnival known as the “Carnaval International de Victoria.”
