SINGAPORE – India is expected to see an increase in British visitors this year.

The sub-continent jumped unexpectedly into the top ten list of the most popular destinations that were searched for on Tuesday 10th January 2012 – the busiest day of the year for visits to the Skyscanner UK travel site.

Almost 600,000 visits were recorded on the Skyscanner UK site on Tuesday with so many of them searching for flights to India that it pushed the destination to position nine, up six places from last year.

The data released is a good indication of the travel behavior expected throughout the rest of the year.

Top Ten most searched destinations for British tourists:

1. Spain
2. USA
3. UK
4. Italy
5. France
6. Turkey
7. Germany
8. Portugal
9. India
10. Greece

The top five most popular arrival points for British visitors flying to India are: Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Bangalore and Ahmedabad.

Kavitha Gnanamurthy, Market Development Manager for India, commented:

“India has long had strong connections with the UK, with a high volume of visitors between the two nations. The sub-continent has always held great allure for British travelers, with its diverse landscape, climate and culture proving very attractive to tourists. In addition to this, over one million people with Indian heritage live in the UK, with many of them visiting friends and family in India on a regular basis. Due to the heavy depreciation of rupee value in recent months, UK travelers may be attracted by the great value India currently offers.”
