The year 2012 will start with a blast in three of Indonesia’s major cities, Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bandung as the grand Java New Year Concert 2012 gets underway.

The special performances will present a groundbreaking program of two operas in one show based on short stories by Indonesia’s “Master of Short Stories,” Putu Wijaya, and featuring the musical score by Indonesia’s most prominent classical musician: Ananda Sukarlan. The show itself will be staged in Jakarta on January 8, in Surabaya on January 13, and in Bandung on January 15.

Actors are winners of the Tembang Puitik Ananda Sukarlan (The Poetic Songs of Ananda Sukarlan) National Vocal Competition held last April in Surabaya, and are considered the best classical singers of Indonesia at the moment.

The first opera, entitled “Laki-Laki Sejati,” or “A True Man”, will feature soprano coloratura Evelyn Merrelita and mezzo-soprano Eriyani Tenga Lunga. The opera itself gained huge success during its World Premiere last September and received great reviews from a number of media including Kompas, Jakarta Post, TEMPO, Femina, and many others.

“Mendadak Kaya” or “Suddenly Rich” is the title of the second opera, which will premiere at the show. The opera is a verbal slapstick comedy about a man’s desire to be wealthy who turns to a witchdoctor to make him rich, but then discovers the fatal consequences. Performers will be 2 tenors, Adi “Didut” Nugroho and Pharel Silaban, who will be accompanied by an array of lovely female dancers.

Directed and choreographed by Chendra Panatan, both operas are not only hilariously funny but also contain very profound meaning as to what “a real man” should be and the true meaning of being “rich.”
