Airlines have spotted a business opportunity in Iceland, which has received much media attention lately. A financial crisis hit the country in 2008, which led to great depreciation of the local currency, the Icelandic krona, making it more affordable for people to visit the country. A volcanic eruption in Iceland in 2010 made the world news when Mt. Eyjafjallajokull spewed ash across much of Western Europe bringing aviation in places like London, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt to a standstill for a few days.

Mr. Eydal said it is uncertain how many airlines will actually fly to Iceland in 2012 as some airlines may still withdraw their application.

Three carriers based in Iceland have applied to fly in and out of Iceland in 2012. Icelandair, Iceland Express, and the brand-new low-cost air carrier WOW.

Delta, the US based airline, started flying to Iceland in 2011, which is great news for visitors from the Americas.

Norwegian Air Shuttle starts to fly to Iceland in 2012. This is the first time that Scandinavia‘s largest low-cost air carrier flies to Iceland.

Easy Jet also starts to fly to Iceland in 2012. This is very exciting for people living in Europe because Easy Jet is a low-cost air carrier with an extensive network within Europe.

Icelandair has added Denver Colorado in the US to its network in spring 2012.
