Fire on board United Airlines Boeing 777-200 flight Newark-Brussels

233 passengers on board a Boeing 777-200 operated by United Airlines on a nonstop flight from Newark, New Jersey, to the Belgium capital, Brussels, had quite a scare Tuesday night after a fire broke out in the galley area of the aircraft.

The United Airlines captain made the decision to divert to Halifax for an emergency landing. The emergency landing went smoothly and passengers were able to deplane normally.

The Canadian Royal Mountain Police Halifax District confirmed the fire was contained to the galley area of the aircraft. United Airlines flight attendants were able to put the fire out with the on board fire extinguisher before landing.

The Halifax Stanfield Fire Crew were at the scene. No one was injured.
