The Dead Sea has been nominated to become one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, one of 28 finalists nominated for this title. The campaign is organized and run by N7W.com, which is the same international foundation that organized the New 7 Wonders of the World campaign back in 2007, and the one in which Petra won the title as well. That accomplishment had a positive effect on tourism in Jordan, as the number of visitors to Petra rose from 581,000 visitors in 2007 to 975,000 visitors in 2010, which is a 68% increase.

The Dead Sea is considered a wonder of nature due to its many unique qualities. Besides being the lowest point on Earth, the Dead Sea possesses many healing and curative properties owing to the high percentage of salt and minerals in its waters plus the biometric pressure and increased oxygen in its atmosphere. This makes it a top destination for leisure and wellness, as well as for medical reasons, over the course of history and up until our present day.

The voting for the N7W campaign continues until November 11, 2011, where voting will be counted through the website, www.n7w.com, or through SMS voting through all mobile service providers in Jordan by texting โ€œDead Seaโ€ to 94089 at 6 piasters for each SMS. There is also an international telephone voting number that can be found at the website.

If the Dead Sea were to win this title, it will establish its place on the worldwide tourism map and will encourage investment in the area. Moreover, in the event of the Dead Seaโ€™s win, Jordan will be the proud destination of two World Wonders, which will greatly strengthen Jordanโ€™s tourism presence.

It is also worthy to mention that Jordan will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of the rediscovery of the ancient rose-red city of Petra in 2012, which will be marked with a host of events and activities to mark the occasion.
