New routes, flights mean more tourists to Greece

Air China has launched the first flight in a resumed Air China service between China and Greece (18.5) via Munich. Deputy Foreign Minister Spyros Kouvelis and a Greek delegation returning from a trip to China were among the passengers. During an inauguration ceremony, Kouvelis revealed that an agreement to facilitate the issuance of visas to Chinese citizens wishing to visit Greece was signed during his visit to Beijing.

Two low-cost airlines will be flying Dutch and German tourists to the islands of North Aegean this year: Transavia and Air Berlin. Austrian Airlines will increase the number of weekly flights linking Athens with Vienna to 11, from the current 7, as of June 1, the company said in a recent presentation. The extra flights will operate until the end of October.

Ryanair is offering 17 new routes to Greece and it has started running the new additions in April with flights to top holiday choices Thessaloniki, Rhodes and Kos. Ryanair is also commencing its first routes from the island of Corfu to London from June 2011, which will deliver 30,000 passengers per year, and create up to 30 local jobs in Corfu. New direct flights from Vienna to Volos via “Lauda Air,” (subsidiary of Austrian Airlines) started on May 23. The air carrier “Swiss’ has added a second daily flight as of April 29, 2011, between Athens and Geneva. Spanish company Vueling is offering low cost flights beginning from June 23 until September 11, directly to Crete and Mykonos islands from Barcelona, while its in-flight magazine “Ling” features and article on Crete and Mykonos in its May 2011 issue.

Moreover, the Spanish air carrier will be offering weekly flights from Barcelona to Santorini beginning from July 16 to September 4. Hellenic Imperial Airways has announced the commencement of its new weekly and direct scheduled flights, Athens – New York, as of Friday, June 24, 2011.
