The Volcano Trail, organized in partnership with the Athletic Club de la Plaine des Cafres (CAPC), the City, and the Volcano Sport Association, will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2014. For the occasion, 500 runners will meet in Bourg-Murat to take to the paths of ancient volcano guides.

This race is part of an approach that combines sports and tourism with the history of the first guides of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano on Reunion Island.

The course, which extends about 25 kilometers with a 1,280 meter gain in elevation, will feature 500 competitors engaging in the race. Their mission is to walk the trails steeped in history that lead to the Piton de la Fournaise. To do this, participants will join in Bourg-Murat No Bellecombe (commune of Sainte-Rose) and go through the Piton Guichard, Nose Beef, Piton Textor, the Oratory Sainte-Therese, the Plaine des Sables, and the cottage of the volcano.

The Volcano Trail is an event that takes place in strict compliance with the environment. The organizers first undertook to minimize the impact of the race on the natural environment, and secondly, to educate competitors about the preservation of the environment.
