(eTN) – She may not have snatched the Miss Tourism World, but Botswana’s Mphoentle Motsumi managed to take one of the top prizes on offer at the Miss Tourism World pageant held on December 7 in Malaysia.
Motsumi beat other African contestants to win the Miss Tourism Africa crown. There were 33 beauties competing for the global title.
Speaking to Showbiz, Motsumi related that she was very excited about scooping one of the titles on offer.
“It means much to me, considering that this was my first major pageant,” she said.
Motsumi intends to embark on a variety of projects to help the needy during her reign as Miss Tourism Africa.
She explained that contestants from Africa had a tough time when it came to hair styles because salons in Sarawak, Malaysia, told them that they were not competent to do their hair.
“I did not change my hairstyle for the entire time I was there,” she said.
She also said in some instances, there was what seemed to be a cultural clash, as some people were quite shocked to see her wearing bo rampetshane (traditional sandals).
“We were asked to wear our traditional attires and I wore a leteisi (traditional wear) with bo rampetshane and everyone was looking at me with shock,” she said.
She also revealed that most of the people in Malaysia do not know where Botswana is, with some asking whether it was one of the major towns in South Africa.
Miss Tourism World was scooped by India, with the second prize going to Venezuela, and the third prize to Australia.
