The Chinese government is reportedly going to pay for the construction of a brand new passenger terminal in Zanzibar, according to information sent to this correspondent late last week. China extended a US70+ million loan agreement to the Zanzibari government, part of which will be dedicated towards the building of new facilities at the airport. Work there, aimed to extend the single runway to accommodate larger wide-bodied aircraft, is already ongoing and is being financially supported by funds from the World Bank and other bilateral funding agencies.

Besides fishing and agriculture, tourism is the main source of income for Zanzibar, also known as the Spice Island. An expanded and modernized airport will be hugely helpful to attract greater visitors numbers from overseas, which will in turn positively affect the country’s economy.
