HONOLULU, HI โ€” Korean Air recently announced that it will add additional service from Seoul to Honolulu beginning on June 12, 2010. The carrier plans to add three additional weekly flights every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, around 780 additional air seats per week, to supplement its existing daily service from Incheon International Airport to Honolulu International Airport.

โ€œThe additional flights come at a time when we are seeing tremendous growth โ€“ 91 percent for the first quarter of 2010 โ€“ from the Korea market,โ€ said Mike McCartney, president and CEO of HTA. โ€œWe are excited by the additional service and feel it will boost arrivals and spending even further from this important market.โ€

The Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) and its contractor, Hawaii Tourism Korea (HTK), have been working with the visitor industry to drive demand to travel to Hawaii from the growing Korea market through aggressive marketing campaigns and cooperative programs. Major travel agents are already working on developing various Hawaii tour products and packages targeted at the family and individual traveler markets.

โ€œOur plans for the additional flights to Hawaii represent the great interest by Korean Air in Hawaii, and Korean Air will work closely with the Hawaii Tourism Authority and Hawaii Tourism Korea to launch various public relations and marketing activities to aggressively promote the new flights,โ€ said Myung-Sun Hwang, managing vice president of regional headquarters of Korean Air.

HTK also plans to launch a large-scale consumer promotion to draw attention to the Korean Air additional flights specifically targeted at honeymooners, individual travelers, and groups. HTK and the Hawaii Visitors and Conventions Bureau are also in the process of developing public relations and marketing activities targeting the meetings, convention, and incentive group travel.

โ€œWhile the total outbound travel from Korea was down 21 percent in 2009 following the H1N1 scare, the number of visitors to Hawaii was up 44 percent, which bodes very well for Hawaii,โ€ added McCartney. โ€œWith eased restrictions for overseas travel following the visa waiver, there is pent-up demand to travel, and we have beefed up our marketing efforts in South Korea to make sure Hawaii is top-of-mind as an ideal destination to visit.โ€
