The blast at the German Bakery is believed to have killed at least nine people and injured many more.

The bakery, popular with foreign visitors, was hit on Saturday evening, when it was at its most crowded.

The large explosion also destroyed or damaged adjacent shops.

The bomb, which left a large crater in the restaurant’s interior, was apparently set off by a member of the restaurant staff, who was investigating an unattended parcel.

At first, police believed that an exploded propane gas tank might have been the cause, but the country’s Home Secretary, Gopal Krishna Pillai, has since confirmed it was a bomb.

Many foreigners, who travelled to Pune for its famous meditation and religious retreats, are among the dead and injured.

The bakery was only about 200 metres from the large Osho Ashram, which was founded by the controversial late guru, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh.

It was also on the same street as the Pune branch of Chabad House, which caters to Jewish travellers.

Chabad House in Mumbai was also one of the targets when gunmen from the Lashkar-e-Taiba group attacked the city.
