The Bentwood Inn, located in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is deepening their commitment to the environmental well-being of the region by implementing comprehensive environmental initiatives and teaming with The Wilderness Society (TWS).

From the Sierras to the Smokies, from “sea to shining sea,” and all the wild places in between, America’s wilderness is an indelible part of our national heritage and an important legacy to pass on to our children.

Pristine, undeveloped wilderness is important – not only in its own right, but for the clean air and water, recreation, and wildlife habitat it provides all of us.

But these wild places are constantly under pressure and need protection in order to thrive.

And now there is a new program that makes it easy for winter travelers to support those remaining wilderness areas – WinterGreen Vacations. www.wilderness.org

The idea is simple. Stay at the Bentwood Inn, in Jackson, Wyoming, from January through March, 2010, and they will donate 2 percent of your lodging to The Wilderness Society. The beta-test of the program has begun with a select group of 17 small, eco-friendly, and independently-owned inns and B&Bs in 11 states across the country. The goal is to go national in 2011, with hopefully thousands of such eco-sensitive lodging facilities participating.

The Bentwood Inn is a luxury bed and breakfast nestled on 3 acres of Jackson Hole solitude, a couple of casts away from the Snake River and just down the road from the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and the south entrance to Grand Teton National Park.

Built in 1995, the inn was constructed with massive 200-year-old logs brought in from Yellowstone National Park after the great fire of 1988. There is over 6,000 square feet of luxurious space, including a 3-story, river-rock fireplace in the Great Room. Each of the guest rooms has a private deck and fireplace, Wi-Fi, and flat screen. The large, expansive decks are perfect for relaxing and socializing in warm weather and ideal for weddings and events.

“We are all committed to protecting these wild, beautiful areas of our country,” said owner Keith Sproule. “And we are honored to work with The Wilderness Society in what we hope will become a major annual program generating strong financial support for their outstanding work.”

Founded in 1935, The Wilderness Society’s mission is to protect wilderness and inspire Americans to care for our wild places. The Wilderness Society is America’s premier public lands conservation organization. TWS and its 500,000 members and supporters are dedicated to protecting America’s wilderness and to developing a nationwide network of these iconic wild lands through public education, scientific analysis, and advocacy.

“We’re in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, ideally located just minutes from some of the best skiing, hiking, and fishing in the country,” said Keith Sproule. “We are excited by a chance to support this American treasure through WinterGreen.”

NATURAL HISTORY INTERPRETATION AT THE INN

Ninety-seven percent of the land area around Jackson Hole is protected as national park, national forest, dedicated wilderness, Bureau of Land Management, National Wildlife Sanctuary, or private conservation initiatives. The expanse of protected areas helps sustain wildlife habitat and affords some of the greatest wildlife viewing in the United States. The Bentwood Inn is committed to providing their guests the opportunity to understand the beauty and uniqueness of Jackson Hole as part of their vacation experience.

In addition to teaming with The Wilderness Society, the Bentwood Inn offers their guests a weekly presentation by a professional naturalist from the Teton Science School.

The presentation is given after dinner in the Great Room of the Inn, complete with a roaring fire and hot apple cider to create an intimate setting. The presentation is an interactive program that includes guest participation in the form of a “Paradise Puzzle.” The puzzle is a slide presentation designed to facilitate a discussion of Jackson’s unique natural heritage. Guests are introduced to the population, diseases, migration patterns, feeding programs, laws, and sanctuaries that have an impact on the regions’ animals, including elk, bison, pronghorn, brown and black bears, grizzly bears, mule deer, fish, and beaver.
