More Chinese tourists are choosing to spend their Chinese New Year holidays in Taiwan, thanks to the opening of direct two-way air links across the Taiwan Strait, travel agents said Thursday.

It is estimated that some 40,000 Chinese tourists will come to Taiwan during the New Year holiday period that begins Feb. 13, four times the number that came for the last Lunar New Year, said Hsu Kao-ching, secretary-general of the Travel Agent Association of Taiwan.

Flying is not the only way to come to Taiwan for the holiday, said Jean Chang, chairwoman of the Taipei-based Golden Foundation Tours.

“Some Chinese tourists will arrive aboard the luxury Costa Cruise,” she said.

The cruiseliner is scheduled to sail between Hong Kong and Keelung with a stop in Taichung between Feb. 2-22, with tourists from China accounting for about 70 percent of the holidaymakers aboard.

A six-day, five-night cruise costs 5,999 Chinese yuan (US$878) per person, according to Chang.

The passengers, mostly families, will tour Taipei 101 building, the National Palace Museum, Sun Moon Lake and northern scenic tourist attractions such as Yeliou and Jiufen, she added.

Meanwhile, a manager for Lion Travel said the number of Chinese tourists who will be visiting Taiwan for the second time has also gradually increased.

“These people have asked to have their itineraries in Taiwan customized,” the manager said.
