Royal Caribbean International’s cruise ship Empress of the Seas has cancelled its port call in San Juan, Puerto Rico, yesterday due to violent protests against Puerto Rico’s Governor Ricardo Rosselló.

“In light of current unrest in San Juan, Puerto Rico, we have cancelled today’s call to San Juan,” Owen Torres, communications manager for Royal Caribbean said in a statement on Tuesday.

Empress of Seas was re-routed to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands and ship’s passengers will receive refunds for prepaid San Juan shore activities, according to cruise line officials.

A second Royal Caribbean ship, Harmony of the Seas, has skipped a scheduled visit to San Juan, Puerto Rico earlier today.

The next Royal Caribbean cruise ship’s visit to San Juan is scheduled for tomorrow – Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas is scheduled to stop in San Juan on Thursday. No information on whether this port call will be cancelled too is available yet.
