ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada – The top tourism official in Grenada has been suspended for failing to greet the inaugural flight to the Caribbean island by Canadian-based Sunwing Airlines Inc.

Tourism Board director William Joseph is the first official to face disciplinary action since the lack of a greeting for the Nov. 23 flight prompted an outcry from the local tourism industry.

Board chairman Richard Strachan says Joseph’s two-week suspension takes effect Tuesday. He said the board made the decision over the weekend and is still investigating the incident.

The Grenada Hotel and Tourism Association has complained there should have been a welcome ceremony for the flight that arrived near dawn.
