Kochi – Cruise tourism, a niche market, would give a new dimension to tourism in India, which had slowed down from January this year, Union tourism Minister Kumari Selja said today.

Cruise tourism, which has tremendous growth potential, was one area in which the country was lagging behind, she said.

Indian tourism had slowed down from January this year, but things are now looking up again, the minister told reporters on the sidelines of a function to mark the launching of cruise operations in the India-Maldives-Colombo triangle here.

Asked if reports about the visits of terror suspects David Headley and his associate Tahawwur Hussain Rana, arrested by FBI, would impact tourism in the country, she said “Not at all. Why should it have any impact?”

The tourism sector was very vibrant and this kind of incidents should not be seen as a setback at all, she said.

The Indian economy was forging ahead and tourism industry was contributing 6% to the GDP, she said.

Tourism ministry had helped the Kochi port to improve tourism infrastructure especially during the conduct of the recent Volvo Ocean race and this would be further extended, Selja added.
