Thailand assumed the ASEAN one-and-a-half-year chairmanship in July last year. Thailand has summarized its priorities during that term with the three Rs: realizing the commitments under the ASEAN charter, revitalizing a people centered community, and reinforcing human development and security for all the people of the region.

About ASEAN

The five original members – Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand – established ASEAN in 1967 in Bangkok. Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia joined over the next 32 years. As of 2006, the ASEAN region had a population of about 560 million and a combined gross domestic product of almost US$1100 billion.
