A travel magazine announced that San Francisco was voted the top city to visit in the U.S. in the publication’s annual survey of its readers, the 17th year in a row the city has won the category.

The poll of more than 25,000 readers was done by Conde Nast Traveler, and San Francisco finished second only to Sydney, Australia, for the best cities to visit in the world.

San Francisco topped the U.S. list, with Charleston, S.C., and Santa Fe, N.M. finishing second and third.

“San Francisco continues to be recognized for its scenic beauty, diverse neighborhoods, restaurants and cultural attractions by travelers worldwide,” San Francisco Convention and Visitor Bureau President Joe D’Alessandro said in a statement.

The cities were rated on atmosphere/ambience, culture/sites, friendliness, lodging, restaurants, and shopping.

The magazine’s readers also chose Virgin America, a San Francisco-based airline, as the top domestic airline for the second year in a row.

The complete results of the poll will appear in the November issue of the magazine, which goes on newsstands on Oct. 20. The results are also on the magazine’s Web site at www.cntraveler.com/readerschoice.
