Green Globe recently recertified the award-winning Eden Lodge. Synonymous with combining luxury and sustainable development, Eden Lodge is a member of the Ecoluxury hotel group, a selection of the best eco-lodges in the world. Eden Lodge was the first Green Globe property to be certified in Madagascar and was the first solar powered hotel in the world.

Eden Lodge is renowned for its many sustainable endeavors and over the past year the property has focused on projects that remain respectful of the environment. In partnership with Ademe (Agence de lโ€™Environnent et de la Maรฎtrise de lโ€™Energie), it continues to develop eco-tourism in the island nation. Under conventions with Ademe, the Lodge has invested 150,000 Euros in the installation of a solar photovoltaic generator (10kWc.) along with 44 solar panels and other high-tech equipment. All electrical equipment and LED lighting at the property are chosen for their low energy consumption.

Water saving measures and management of this precious resource have been carefully considered and planned. As the island of Madagascar has 300 days of sun per year, hot water is available year-round. Eden Lodge is self-sufficient in hot water as a result of deploying thermal sensors (CESI). In addition, four wells are established on site providing clean water for the entire property.

The Lodge itself is an eco-friendly building that was built in accordance with best practices. Indigenous stones, non-precious woods and ravinala (thatched) roofs were incorporated in the original construction of the building. All builders and crafts people were hired from within the local community.

In line with Eden Lodgeโ€™s environmental policy and as part of its waste management strategy, steel is reused and transformed into pans and other household items, plastic consumption is limited, and glass waste is taken to Nosy Be for recycling.

Green Globe is the worldwide sustainability system based on internationally accepted criteria for sustainable operation and management of travel and tourism businesses. Operating under a worldwide license, Green Globe is based in California, USA and is represented in over 83 countries. Green Globe is an Affiliate Member of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). For information, please click here.
