MIRI – A free tourist tram service will be introduced in this resort city in March.

Miri City Incorporated (MCI) working committee chairman Lee Kim Shin said yesterday the concept of the tram service would be similar to that in Perth, Australia, with each tram able to accommodate up to 30 passengers at a time.

The tram would serve all the tourist attractions, shopping centres and several leading hotels in the city, he said.

Lee said that following the decision to provide the service, a management committee comprising 25 stakeholders, among them the Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Sarawak Tourism Board and the Sarawak Bumiputera Entreprenuers Chamber, was formed.

A local transport company, the Miri Transport Company (MTC), would operate and maintain the service, he added.

“For a start, we will have one tram. Should the service receive good response from tourists, we would consider increasing the number of trams,” said Lee, who is also the State Assistant Infrastructure Development and Communications Minister.
