Five people were killed and 12 injured when a van carrying a group of Tanzanians travelling on a highway in the southwestern state of Arizona rolled over Wednesday.

The accident took place on a highway some 80 kilometres (50 miles) east of the city of Tucson, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said in a statement.

“The collision involves a large passenger van,” the statement read. “The van was travelling westbound when it lost control and rolled over the left side guardrail and down the raised median onto the left eastbound lane of Interstate 10.”

Of the 17 people aboard the van, 12 were flown by helicopters to local trauma centres, the statement read.

“It appears all of the occupants of the van were adults,” the statement said, adding that the victims “are from Tanzania and are here in Arizona at the invitation of the International Rescue Committee (IRC).”

The cause of the accident “is under investigation,” the statement added.
