MPs move to lift airline surfboard ban

A MOTION has been launched in the British Parliament to force British Airways to drop its ban on the carrying of surf boards.
The airline attracted a wave of protest late last year when it announced it would no longer carry cumbersome boards or hang gliders, canoes and vaulting poles.

It said it was deemed unsuitable for airport baggage systems.

But a motion calling for an overturn has been put forward and has already attracted the signatures of more than 50 MPs including high profile Scottish leader Alex Salmond.

MP David Davies said the ban acted as a barrier to tourism and a board was no more cumbersome than a set of golf clubs or a musical instrument.

A spokeswoman for the British Surfing Association said support for lifting the ban included 9000 signatures, many of Australian surfers including champion Mick Fanning.
