MALABO — The head of Equatorial Guinea’s national airline has vanished after leaving the country on a business trip with cash worth millions of euros, a company official said Saturday.

Ceiba Intercontinental boss Mamadou Gaye left the country in late February to negotiate deals with aviation authorities of Ghana, Senegal, Ivory Coast and Gambia to establish a west Africa office for the fledgling company, the official said.

“But there has been no trace of him since then,” the company official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Gaye, a Senegalese citizen of Gambian origin, had a monthly salary of 25 million CFA francs (38,000 euros), the source said.

“He took more than 3.5 billion CFA francs (five million euros/6.5 million dollars) and a stock of spare parts for new ATR (airplanes),” he said.

Gaye, a former director of Gambia-based Air Dabia, arrived in Equatorial Guinea in 2007 to take charge of the newly created Ceiba Intercontinental.

The airline offers flights between Equatorial Guinea’s capital Malabo and the second city Bioko and also flies to Gabon, Cameroon and Benin.
