The ignition of what appears to have been an improvised explosive device on an Underground train this morning has been making headlines. It is obviously a matter of great concern that up to twenty people were sufficiently hurt in the incident to require hospital treatment. A significant proportion of those hurt were injured in the rush to get down the stairs: the incident was on that part of the network which is above ground.

For those not directly involved, it is important to know the extent of the disruption. Parsons Green Underground Station (where the explosion took place) is currently closed, and the branch of the District Line on which Parson Green is situated has been suspended. Any visitor affected by the suspension is advised to use the alternative bus services which have been laid on. Anyone driving round that part of London will find that the roads closed in the immediate aftermath have now reopened, with the exception of Parsons Green Lane. We understand there is some disruption to Circle line services, but these are neither abnormal nor severe.

Other than this, there is no other interference with the conduct of life.

Tom Jenkins, CEO of ETOA said “This appears to be mercifully inept. These events are successful in so far as they are newsworthy. The most notable thing at present is the striking durability of the carrier bag containing the device.”
