Operation Airdrop was formed just days ago by radio host John Clay Wolfe and Doug Jackson to deliver relief supplies to hard to reach areas along the Texas Gulf Coast.ย  In the few days since it was created, the group has grown to 50+ pilots and planes from across the nation.

Texas Baptist Men, the Salvation Army and other groups are working in partnership with Operation Airdrop, and will be responsible for receiving and distributing the goods brought in by the pilots to hard to access areas across the region.

Donation locations and updated needs can be found on the group’s website operation-airdrop.com.

Immediate needs are for diapers, baby formula, sleeping bags and toiletries.ย  All other supplies at this moment are welcomed, but will be staged in delivery time behind WATER and NON PERISHABLE FOOD.

Next week, the Southern Cross–a WWII vintage C-47 “Skytrain” piloted by Jim Terry of Greatest Generation Aviation and Brett Hobson of Comfort Experts–will begin making Operation Airdrop flights.ย  Traditional and Social Media seating is available on a limited basis.

Hobson said in a statement:

“We’re amazed by the support for this initiative, and we’re proud to be bringing the largest plane to the effort.ย  The Southern Cross can carry almost 10,000 pounds of people and cargo, roughly 5 times what smaller planes can manage.ย  Our goal is to get in as many flights during daylight hours as we can.”

Often known by its civilian designation of DC-3, the Southern Cross served in WWII before transferring to civilian service.ย  At one time, it was the VIP transport plane for the President of Mexico.ย  The Southern Cross is frequently seen at airshows around the country giving rides to Veterans, and provides an authentic WWII flying experience to passengers from Fort Worth’s Meacham Field and Vintage Flying Museum.

John Clay Wolfe’s radio career began in 2004 when he wrestled the mic from the radio DJ during a live broadcast from Wolfe Chevrolet.ย  Today his show is syndicated on some of the highest rated Rock, Country, and Sports stations in top markets across the land, where he and his crew are heard by half a million listeners every week.
