Two 35,000-square-foot murals – “Hawaiian Humpbacks” and “New Millennium” – were created in 1999 by renowned marine life artist and muralist, Wyland, as gifts to the city of Honolulu to recognize the past, present, and future of Hawaii’s fragile marine life ecosystems.

Conservationist, Wyland, will start restoring these two massive murals near Honolulu’s International Airport today. He first painted the murals 20 years ago, and they have become recognized as a welcoming symbol of Honolulu.

The artist will paint each day, starting at 8 am until sundown, from Monday, August 28, through Saturday, September 2, until the restoration work is completed. The public is welcome to visit the area surrounding the 14-story office tower to watch the artist’s progress on the project.

The murals at the Pacifica Airport Center Building located at 3049 Ualena Street in Honolulu, were among 100 murals painted in 17 countries by the artist over a 30-year period as part of one of the world’s largest arts-in-public places projects.
