Canada’s Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities Carla Qualtrough issued the following statement on the opening of the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg”

It will be with great excitement and anticipation that we watch the thousands of young Canadian athletes from every province and territory parade into the Bell MTS Place for the opening ceremony of the 2017 Canada Summer Games this evening.

From July 28 to August 13, we will have an incredible opportunity to witness rousing displays of courage and perseverance as athletes push for the podium. Like their predecessors, they will glow under the national spotlight and earn the admiration of their adversaries while inspiring Canada’s next generation of athletes.

I strongly believe that sport has the power to change lives in our communities, where the fundamentals of sport and physical activity can be ingrained through safe, healthy and enjoyable experiences on the field, the rink, the playground or in the pool. Sport teaches our children about discipline and sacrifice, improves physical and mental health, creates jobs and provides opportunities, andโ€”especially during Canada 150โ€”brings a country together.

The Government of Canada is proud to support the 2017 Canada Summer Games for this 50th anniversary of the Canada Games, in its endeavor to showcase Canada’s athletes. The Government is pleased to provide opportunities and support that facilitate and foster physical literacy and athletic development. With the right support, we can continue to provide resources to our athletes, from the playground to the podium, while encouraging lifelong participation in a healthy lifestyle.

I would like to thank the City of Winnipeg and the province of Manitoba for accommodating everyone, as well as the Canada Games staff and the thousands of volunteers for their hard work. On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish the best of luck to all of the athletes and coaches as we approach the starting line of our country’s largest domestic sporting event.

Let the Games begin!
