Ms. Rashmi Varma, Secretary of India’s Ministry of Tourism, has asked the states to adopt tourism-friendly policies so that the gap in infrastructure, reflected in the gap of one lakh hotel rooms, can be filled.

She told investors at a meeting organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) on July 5, that the center was revamping the website of the ministry to spread awareness about Indian attractions. Posts in tourist offices abroad were being filled, she added.

Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj said that the state was developing wellness tourism, among other segments. This year, there was a marked increase in tourism from within the country as well.

Among the states taking part in the investors meeting were Madhya Pradesh. The two-day event will see many business meetings take place.
