It’s a day of pride in Germany today. 393 yes, 226 no and 4 had no opinion. This was the result of a vote in the German parliament The Bundestag in Berlin today. The vote was a clear commitment to equality for and is legalizing same- sex marriage in the Federal Republic of Germany once the Bundesrat — Germany’s upper house —  will confirm it. This is expected to happen next week. The Bundesrat has previously approved legalizing same-sex marriage.

After year-long opposition Chancellor, Angela Merkel dropped her opposition and voted for equality.

The bill gives homosexual couples in Germany the same rights as heterosexual couples and will allow same-sex couples to marry and jointly adopt children. It passed by 393 votes to 226, with four abstentions.
The bill is likely to pass through the Bundesrat — Germany’s upper house — next week. The Bundesrat has previously approved legalizing same-sex marriage.
The German foreign ministry already asked German embassies and consulates worldwide to adjust to the change. It will open new opportunities also in immigration and tourism.
