Maltese Chef, David Darmanin, chef founder of Pretty F*cking Good Toast located in London, showcased his Mediterranean dishes at the 32nd Annual Chefs’ Tribute to Citymeals on Wheels at Rockefeller Center in New York City on June 12, with the support of the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA).

David Darmanin served traditional Maltese dishes including octopus with grilled polenta, baba ganoush, crispy shallots & petals and mahi mahi with fresh sheep’s cheese, peas, radish, agrodolce dressing & fennel. David is the chef founder of Pretty F*cking Good Toast located in London, which takes all the ingredients, skill, finesse and twiddly-bits of fine dining, and serve it up on toasts to give you a hand-held experience of world-class gastronomy. David is currently on a world tour and was ecstatic to visit New York and be able to showcase the Maltese cuisine during Citymeals on Wheels prestigious event.

Darmanin said “This has been an amazing experience to have the opportunity to present classic Maltese dishes and work alongside world-famous chefs. I would like to thank the Malta Tourism Authority for supporting our venture and the Citymeals on Wheels’ great cause.”

Michelle Buttigieg, MTA US Representative, thanked Darmanin for his willingness to represent Malta at such an important New York charity event that focused on Mediterranean Cuisine. Buttigieg noted that “Malta was honored to be able to make a contribution, however modest, to this respected charity, Citymeals on Wheels.”

Citymeals on Wheels brought together internationally renowned chefs to celebrate Mediterranean cuisine and culture. Chefs include culinary luminaries like Maria Loi, Michael Psilakis and Farid Zadi as well as returning favorites Daniel Boulud and Larry Forgione, all preparing their favorite Mediterranean-inspired dishes. 100% of the ticket sales and donations raised through this event went directly the preparation and delivery of meals to homebound elderly New Yorkers through Citymeals on Wheels. Last year’s event alone raised over $900,000 – enough to fund over 140,000 meals!

The sunny islands of Malta, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, are home to a most remarkable concentration of intact built heritage, including the highest density of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in any nation-state anywhere. Valletta built by the proud Knights of St. John is one of the UNESCO sights and the European Capital of Culture for 2018. Malta’s patrimony in stone ranges from the oldest free-standing stone architecture in the world, to one of the British Empire’s most formidable defensive systems, and includes a rich mix of domestic, religious and military architecture from the ancient, medieval and early modern periods. With superbly sunny weather, attractive beaches, a thriving nightlife and 7,000 years of intriguing history, there is a great deal to see and do.
