Hungary continues to make a name for itself on the movie-making calendar as a popular country to shoot films. It came to prominence with Wes Andersonโ€™s โ€˜The Grand Budapest Hotelโ€™ film, which is believed to be inspired by what is now Corinthia Hotel Budapest.

Hungary is very attractive to Hollywood film producers because the country boasts well-trained professionals, state-of-the-art studios, and relatively low labor costs. Furthermore, Budapestโ€™s wide-ranging architecture can pass as Paris, London, Rome, or Berlin, and occasionally even New York.

The Hungarian National Film Fund also offers various tax incentives for filming here. Since its inception, the capacity of the film industry has tripled, and more than 100 Hungarian-made films have collected prestigious awards. The film industry contributes more to Hungaryโ€™s GDP than any other EU member states.

The Hungarian film industry is also gaining international recognition in Hollywood itself. Following the successful Oscar win last year of Son of Saul for Best Foreign Language Film, a Hungarian Live Action Short Film, Sing directed by Kristรณf Deรกk (pictured above left) has also taken an Academy Award. Sing has already won the Grand Prix Prize at the Short Shorts Film Festival in Tokyo, the Peopleโ€™s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festivalโ€™s Kids category, and the Adult Jury Prize in the Live-Action Short Film category at the Chicago International Childrenโ€™s Film Festival.

The 25-minute-long Sing โ€œMindenki,โ€ takes place in Budapest in 1991. Inspired by a true story, it follows an award-winning school choir, their charming teacher, and the new girl in class whose arrival starts a series of events that might expose the dark truth behind their fame.

Gabor Varga, CEO of the Origo Film Group, believes Budapest can become the European Hollywood. โ€œI think we have a great chance of that.โ€
