The annual pilgrimage – in the presence of His Holiness Pope Francis this year to mark the centenary – stems from an event in 1917 when three children witnessed a miraculous vision of the Virgin Mary in their town. There were further apparitions the same year. It is now one of the most important religious shrines in the world dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Corinthia Hotel Lisbon is making it easier for the thousands of worshipers to attend the centenary of Portugal’s most famous Christian pilgrimage, at Fatima on May 12-13, with a specially-priced package.

Fatima lies just one hour north of Lisbon and the celebrations include a torch-light evening procession on May 12. The following day a statue of the Virgin Mary is carried from the high altar to the Chapel of the Apparitions. There is a second pilgrimage held in October.

Corinthia Hotel Lisbon’s package is valid on stays between May 13-20 and is bookable from February 20.

In 1917 the Virgin Mary appeared to three young children and exhorted mankind to pray for world peace. Pilgrims can visit the Basilica in the town of Fatima which is the site of two of the children’s graves, as well as the hamlet of Aljustrel where the children lived.
