Frankfurt Airport is popular with young and old as a destination for exciting outings. Now, during the Christmas season, the terminals are ablaze with thousands of lights. The yuletide decorations evoke a festive ambience for an unforgettable visit to Germany’s largest aviation hub. And with the activities and offerings that are available, visitors can also experience the special winter and pre-Christmas atmosphere.

The current highlight is the Winter Tour. This 90-minute adventure begins by letting participants experience the full breadth of operations at the airport. Then a bus takes them to the nearest port on the Main River where a tour ship of the Primus Line is waiting for boarding. While sailing upriver, the towering skyline of “Mainhattan” provides an impressive view for them to enjoy. The tour, which lasts a total of three and a half hours, winds up at one of Germany’s oldest and most vibrant Christmas markets in and around the Römerberg square in the middle of Frankfurt’s Old Town. Individual bookings can be made at Frankfurter Stadtevents and cost 34 euros per person. Tours for groups can be reserved by sending an email to Fraport AG’s booking office at [email protected].

Additional tours, ranging from “Mini” to “XXL”, are available online here. They are also an extremely popular way to spend some time on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, when there are still a few hours left before it’s time to open gifts or light fireworks. The last tour on both days begins at 2 p.m. The Visitors’ Terrace is also open on both days between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., with admission ending at 2.30 p.m.

During the Christmas season, the Airport Shop in Terminal 1 on the departures level of Concourse C also carries a wide selection of gift items and souvenirs. For customers who find it hard to make up their minds, a great option is to give someone “Airport Fascination” in the form of a gift certificate. The recipient can then freely choose how to redeem it: for admission to the Visitors’ Terrace, to book an airport tour, and/or to make one or more purchases in the Airport Shop, depending on the certificate’s value. It’s therefore practically guaranteed to please anyone who’s enthusiastic about aviation or a fan of the airport. Certificates may be purchased for any sum starting at seven euros online or at the airport.

The Best Is Yet to Come

The highlight of this year’s Christmas activities at Frankfurt Airport is the AirXperience Day “Around the World: a Christmas Journey” on December 11, 2016. It will treat guests to an extensive program in both terminals, evoking a holiday atmosphere with Christmas music and customs from around the world, delicious food, and wintertime impressions from Scandinavia. Children can look forward to “TABALUGA and His Friendship Show”, among other things. There will naturally also be hot mulled wine for adults and hot fruit punch for kids on the Visitors’ Terrace. More information is available here.

Fraport AG, the airport’s operator, is committed to continually improving the customer experience and quality of service at Germany’s largest transportation hub as expressed in its slogan, “Gute Reise! We Make It Happen”. Other examples of its efforts include the Frankfurt Airport App and free Wi-Fi for everyone. Passengers and visitors can find more information at www.frankfurt-airport.com, in the Service Shop, and on the airport’s Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube pages.
