Tenerife is a Spanish tourist island and part of the Canary Group, just a 4-hour flight from most European cities. It has always has been a favorite among German and British tourists, but according to Alberto, the destination is now also reaching out to the world and specifically to the North American market.
Not yet confirmed, but in the pipeline, is an American-based airline carrier expecting to soon announce nonstop service to Tenerife, opening the island group to US travelers.
Alberto Bernabé Teja is the Tourism Minister for the Tenerife Island Government. In London during the World Travel Market (WTM), he sat down with eTN Publisher Juergen T. Steinmetz to catch up on what was developing in Tenerife, an island that has been living and breathing tourism for many years.
Tenerife is only a one-hour flight to Morocco, and it enjoys an ideal year-round climate for those seeking a warmer temperature, along with sand and sea.
However, there is a lot more than just sand and sea to Tenerife. Besides enjoying its beaches, there is a lot to do for those vacationing on the island, from exploring a unique culture, geology, and adventures, to shopping and more, it is an all-active holiday destination.
Most of Tenerife’s tourist activities take place in three areas of the island. The south, offers an interesting contrast between its country villages in the mountains and its magnificent beaches, along with a wide range of exclusive accommodation on the coast. The metropolitan area provides most of the shopping adventures, with opportunities to enjoy the island’s cultural life. In the north, beautiful landscapes combine with Tenerife’s most genuine gastronomy, and hidden corners are just waiting to be found and explored.
Whether it be nature, sports, relaxation, leisure, beaches, shopping, dining, or more, Tenerife has got what the savvy traveler is looking for with stunning backdrops to spare.
Explore the island’s most remote spots, discover the wildlife that inhabits them, and revel in natural beauty at its purest. Enjoy birdwatching, hiking, horse riding, volcanoes, whale and dolphin and watching, and at the end of the day, take in the night sky with star gazing.
If you are passionate about cycling, come and lose yourself on Tenerife’s staggering mountain passes and experience the peaceful solitude of its forest tracks. If you are more of a hiker, feel free to explore the magical paths and trails that criss-cross the island. Or why not take a leisurely drive on its network of roads or immerse yourself in its traditions and customs on a themed walking tour? The possibilities are endless and the choice is entirely yours. Drive through a charming valley or take a journey through the ages or along the almond blossom route. Mountain bike or take a ride on horseback through forests and near volcanoes. Themed routes with exotic names like the Clash of the Titans and the Candelaria Pilgrimage Route are always ready to be enjoyed, as are walking and biking tours through the Honey Route, the Route of Castles, and so much more.
People will think you’re crazy for getting up before the crack of dawn and running for miles on end. Others won’t understand why you are always on the lookout for a higher mountain, a longer wave, stronger winds… Some will say it’s all you ever think about and that your sights are always set on the next competition. And they are all right! Every minute that goes by while you’re not doing what you love is simply time ticking away. Sports is an intrinsic part of your existence and life would not make sense without it. In Tenerife, the sports-loving tourism can jump into free diving, caving, rock climbing, deep-sea fishing, golf, kayaking, kitesurfing, paragliding, scuba diving, sailing, surfing, and that’s just some of the activities.
