United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) candidate for the next Secretary General, HE Walter Mzembi, also serving as the minister of tourism for Zimbabwe, is on the road again.

United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) candidate for the next Secretary General, HE Walter Mzembi, also serving as the minister of tourism for Zimbabwe, is on the road again. Today he was in Cairo.

His Excellency Walter Mzembi spoke to eTN from Egypt and said, “My Engagement with Egyptian establishment today included a working dinner with Tourism Minister, HE Mohamed Yehia Rashed.”

Mr. Rashed is also Chairperson of the UNWTO Executive Council.
In March 2016, the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi swore 10 new ministers into Egyptโ€™s cabinet, following several weeks of speculation over whether or not the shuffle would take place and which ministers would be removed.

Mohamed Yehia Rashed assumed the position of Minister of Tourism, taking over from three-time minister Hisham Zaazou.

Rashed is a seasoned hotel manager, having worked in the hotel industry in various countries around the world since graduating from hotel school. His career in the hospitality business has seen him work for Marriott for 33 years in the United States, Europe and Africa. In 1997, he landed his first job as general manager of the newly-opened Paris Marriott in the Champs-ร‰lysรฉes. After spending more than seven years in the French capital, he moved to Amsterdam in 2004, where he became the general manager of the Dutch capitalโ€™s Renaissance Hotel.

Rashed then returned to Egypt, where he became the Chief Leading Officer for Al Kharafi Group for Tourism.

Zaazouโ€™s successor has assumed responsibility for Egyptโ€™s tourism portfolio at a difficult time, as the countryโ€™s tourism sector continues to struggle due to a string of security-related incidents. Rashed is expected to introduce innovative measures to boost tourism, which was once the flagship of the Egyptian economy.

Mr. Mzembi went on to say: “I made a courtesy call to Egypt’s Foreign Affairs Minister HE Sameh Shoukri, and had an engaging interactive session with the Egyptian African Union Candidate for the UNESCO, Director General post, Ambassador Dr Moushira Khattab.”

Ambassador Khattab was the former Minister of Family & Population for Egypt.

Mr. Mzembi talking to eTN at almost midnight Cairo time on Thursday concluded: “My visit with my Egyptian counterparts was a very respectful with deeply mutual engagements.”
