India outbound tourism is becoming increasingly important for Mauritius.

India outbound tourism is becoming increasingly important for Mauritius.

After growth of 17% registered in 2015 (over 2014), tourist arrivals from January to June 2016 has shot up by 8.2%, with the month of June registering 2-digit growth of 11.4%.

The month of July 2016 has performed very well with an increase in passenger arrivals of some 30%.

With a view to sustaining this growth momentum, supporting additional flights from MK (Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai), and to diversify into new Indian cities (Ahmedabad), the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) is organizing a roadshow to reinforce the bonding with the Indian travel representatives as they are still the main channels of distribution in the following cities.

Mauritius will showcase its tourism product in Mumbai (Monday, August 22), Ahmedabad (Tuesday, August 23), Delhi (Thursday, August 25), Bangalore (Friday, August 26), and Chennai (Saturday, August 27).

Ahmedabad will for the first time feature within the roadshow itinerary, given its emerging upper-class and HNI.

Some 100 (Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai) travel trade representatives in all cities are expected to attend. Some 60 trade representatives will be expected in Ahmedabad. Three focused group discussions will also be organized in Mumbai and Delhi to better understand the aspirations of the Indian consumers and the trade.

For Chennai, Bangalore, and Ahmedabad, the meeting will target only the top 5 tour organizers (TO).

An increasing number of participants have shown interest in the Indian market. As of now, some 35 have already confirmed, compared to 22 in 2015. Noteworthy is the presence of hotel groups like Beachcomber, Shanti Maurice, VLH, One and Only, and Intercontinental, along with product companies (Casela, Blue Safari), which proved that the MTPA strategy to move upmarket on the Indian market is well on track.
