Earthquake in Peru: 4 dead, 30 injured

It happened close to Arequipa. An earthquake in Peru last night hit 9.58 pm and Peuvian authorities say a magnitude 5.4 earthquake has killed four people and injured 30 in a the remote Andean part of the country.

It’s not known if any tourists are among the victims

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake hit at 9:58 p.m. local time (7:58 p.m. PDT) Sunday near the town of Chivay, more than 600 miles south of Lima, the country’s capital. It was centered relatively close to the surface at a depth of about six miles.



Civil defense told local media Monday that four people had died due to the collapse of walls. 40 houses were destroyed.
