Delta says it rejoins US Airline Safety-Program

Delta Air Lines Inc., the world’s largest carrier, is rejoining a voluntary safety program created to cut the industry’s rate of fatal accidents.

Delta had let the program lapse in December 2006. The carrier reached an agreement with pilots to reinstate the Aviation Safety Action Program, according to a statement by the airline today.

The announcement comes amid a push by airline regulators to restore participation in the effort, which lets pilots report safety flaws without fear of punishment. Delta and three other carriers had been unable to reach agreements to continue the program after pilots said the companies were conducting separate investigations of incidents designated for ASAP.

Robert Sturgell, then the Federal Aviation Administration’s acting chief, had said in an interview Jan. 9 that one or more of the carriers could rejoin this month, with Delta the closest. Sturgell said at the time that he was trying to help resolve disagreements.
