Star Alliance member Singapore Airlines celebrated an important event in the history of the airline in Europe. The occasion: 45 years of connecting Italy with Singapore. Rome was SQ’s first European hub.

This confirms Singapore Airlines commitment of maintaining constant attention to the needs of the Italian market since 1971.

The 45 yearsโ€™ black tie gala night celebration was held at Palazzo Brancaccio in Rome.

Landed in Italy June 3, 1971, as Malaysiaโ€“Singapore Airlines (MSA), a joint ownership of the governments of Malaysia and Singapore established in 1966, the Singapore government maintained the European routes under the flagship Singapore Airlines in October 1972 following the split between the two airlines.



A press conference after the Rome gala was attended by: Subhas Menon, regional vice president Europe, Singapore Airlines, Jerry Seah, Italy general manager, Eric Eng Director central southern Italy, Roberta Sarain, sales & communications manager for Italy and Carmen Sinatra Station Manager SIA-Rome Fiumicino Airport.

Subhas Menon introduced the new Premium Economy that “meets the needs of both the business traveller not always “up level”, but also ideal for the leisure that demand more comfort and service on board. ” Premium Economy is available on international routes.

SQ pointed out the new link “Capital Express” between Canberra and Wellington and network growth through partnerships and code-share agreement between Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa.

The celebratory event was organized in collaboration with the Singapore Tourism Board, (STPB) who presented the latest data on tourism from Italy.

“2015 has been a good year for international arrivals in Singapore. It enjoyed a sharp increase in the tourism sectorโ€.

The Italian market holds the sixth position for international arrival to the city state with almost 70,000 visitors a year.

The data was presented by Brigitte Fleischauer, STPB area director Central & Southern Europe. She said: “The target is couples between 25 and 50 years of age and the “classic” business travel”.

2016 is a significant year for Star Alliance member Singapore Airlines (SQ) and Italy celebrating the tenth anniversary of flights to and from Milan-Italy-Malpensa airport.

SQ operated the first flight from Malpensa airpor to Singapore on 20 July 2006. Currently six weekly direct are in place to the Singapore capital.

In order to support the growing demand for passengers traveling through Singapore to Southeast and Southwest Asia, as well as to the Southwest Pacific, Singapore Airlines has announced a new winter schedule for flights departing from Milan. Singapore Airlines will retain 6 weekly non-stop flights from Milan Malpensa to Singapore,

The 12.40pm departure times allows early connections in Singapore.
