KINGSTON, Jamaica – Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett, is set to attend high level meetings with key Timeshare stakeholders in Los Cabos, Mexico which is arguably the leading player in the Timeshare industry both as a destination and as an investor and developer. The Minister, who is slated to leave Jamaica on Thursday July 14, 2016, will also visit timeshare properties that are prime examples of best practices in Mexico.

โ€œThe introduction of Timeshare vacations is another way in which we are diversifying our product mix. This is a unique form of tourism which has the potential to create new economic opportunities for Jamaicans while fuelling investment and enhancing Jamaicaโ€™s international appeal,โ€ Minister Bartlett underscored.

He added that โ€œthis trip will enable us to directly engage major developers and investors in the global Timeshare industry and examine the offerings in Mexico, which will guide our activities to develop Timeshare in Jamaica moving forward.โ€

The trip forms part of the aggressive marketing initiative by the Ministry of Tourism, the Jamaica Real Estate Board, JAMPRO and other partners aimed at attracting developers as well as local and international buyers for Timeshare. A special committee which includes representatives from the Ministry and these key entities is driving this process.

Jamaicaโ€™s Timeshare Vacations Act officially took effect on May 1, 2016 providing unique opportunities for developers and buyers alike. Timeshare allows persons to jointly own a vacation property such as a villa or resort condominium. Under this type of agreement each owner is allowed to use the property for a fixed period of time in any given year. Developers are now also able to build properties for use as Timeshare accommodation.

The Minister will be accompanied by the Director of Tourism, Mr. Paul Pennicook, and is scheduled to return to the island on Sunday July 17, 2016.
