ISIS terrorists are once claiming credit for an attack that occurred today in the Holey Artisan Bakery cafe in the diplomatic quarter of the Bangaladesh capital at 9:20 pm local time. The restaurant is popular with expatriates, diplomats, and middle-class families.

A kitchen staff worker at the restaurant who escaped the attack told Jamuna Television that the gunmen chanted “Allahu Akbar” (“God is great”) as they burst into the restaurant.

At least 20 people have been killed and the attackers have taken as many as 20 people as hostages, including foreigners.

Eight to nine gunmen attacked the restaurant where police have confirmed that at least 40 people have been injured.

A police constable named Kamruzzaman told the Guardian that a gunman threw grenades from the second floor of the two-story restaurant. They opened fire, and the police opened fire in return. Although police tried to rescue a civilian, he was shot down by the attackers, along with a local police station chief, Mohammed Salahuddin, and another officer, Ashraful Karim, the assistant police commissioner and Salahuddin’s immediate superior. At least 14 police personnel have been injured and admitted at the nearby United Hospital.

Police have cordoned off the area and hope to negotiate with the gunmen.
