Kenya’s Attorney General Professor Githu Mungai, earlier today launched the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport’s new Magistrate’s Court. It is understood that all offences committed by travelers, or staff for that matter, at the airport, will now be dealt with by this new court, unless the crime must be referred to the High Court as a matter of law.

In particular ivory smugglers, when arrested at JKIA, are now staring at the stark prospect of being produced in court the same or next day for trial, to ensure that they face swift justice for any offences committed and proven in court.

A team of prosecutors will also be based at the new law court while it will be the Airport Police Station where the suspects will be held until either sentenced and sent to prison proper or else freed.

The news comes hot on the heels of yet another major ivory bust at the Port of Mombasa earlier today and regular news from JKIA that mainly individuals in transit from other African countries with laxer law enforcement are caught in the act of trying to smuggle ivory and other prohibited wildlife products to their home country.
