Newport Beach police said they received reports that a woman swimming in the water was bitten at Corona del Mar State Beach around 5 p.m.

A two-mile stretch of the shoreline at Corona del Mar State Beach was closed after a swimmer was bitten by a shark or sea lion late Sunday afternoon, Newport Beach lifeguards confirmed.

Lifeguards found the woman in distress in the water about 150 yards off shore, and when they pulled her out, she had large bites on her upper torso and shoulder.

She was conscious and breathing when she was taken to a nearby hospital. Police could not comment on the extent of the her injuries.
