Sweden will be represented by Sofia Jannock at this year’s edition of the Carnaval International de Victoria in the Seychelles. Sofia Jannok is a twice Grammy-nominated Sámi artist, singer, songwriter, and agitator for indigenous rights and environmental justice. At the recent COP21 climate conference in Paris, Jannok gathered at an indigenous pavilion with others from around the world to call attention to the impact of climate change on indigenous communities. She has also taken a strong stance in social and news media against the mining of Sámi lands. Her recent singles, “We Are Still Here” and “This Is My Land,” adopt a mantra common to indigenous peoples around the world. Jannok’s music is inspired by diverse musical influences, mainly by pop and Sámi yoik. She sings and writes songs in Sámi, Swedish, and English.

The Carnaval International de Victoria in the Seychelles rallies cultural troupes from the Community of Nations who are proud of the culture and in so doing their people. The cultural troupes walk alongside the best and most popular carnivals of the world in a carnival procession described as an explosion of color and culture. The carnival in the Seychelles is set for April 22-24.

Seychelles is a founding member of the International Coalition of Tourism Partners (ICTP) .
