Sweden will be represented by Sofia Jannock at this year’s edition of the Carnaval International de Victoria in the Seychelles. Sofia Jannok is a twice Grammy-nominated Sรกmi artist, singer, songwriter, and agitator for indigenous rights and environmental justice. At the recent COP21 climate conference in Paris, Jannok gathered at an indigenous pavilion with others from around the world to call attention to the impact of climate change on indigenous communities. She has also taken a strong stance in social and news media against the mining of Sรกmi lands. Her recent singles, “We Are Still Hereโ€ and โ€œThis Is My Land,โ€ adopt a mantra common to indigenous peoples around the world. Jannok’s music is inspired by diverse musical influences, mainly by pop and Sรกmi yoik. She sings and writes songs in Sรกmi, Swedish, and English.
